This uniquely structured show presents the story of a 1940s novelist (Stine) who has sold his story about a private detective (Stone) to Hollywood, and has now signed on as the screenwriter. Buddy Fidler, the producer/director of the movie, has some very different ideas, though, about how the story should be told. As Stine works through problems in both his job and personal life, we meets many characters who also appear in the movie adaptation of his novel. All of the Hollywood "real life" scenes are done in color, and all of the movie scenes are done in black and white in the film noir style that was so popular in the 1940s and 50s. This is a sophisticated, sexy and highly stylized show with a fabulous score filled with exciting big band, swing and jazz orchestrations. Almost all characters (except Stine and Stone) play two roles - one in the Hollywood cast and one in the Movie cast.
