RENT
A Bare Stage Production presented by Sunnyvale Community Players
Thank you for your interest in auditioning for SCP’s upcoming production of RENT.
Sunnyvale Community Players is a non-equity community theatre made up of volunteer performers, artists, and production teams. A small travel reimbursement will be made available to all adult performers. The amount will be determined once casting has been completed.
Casting
Performers Ages 18+
We encourage performers from all backgrounds to audition.
SCP is committed to creating an equitable, inclusive, and welcoming environment for our performers and creative teams. We actively work to support and encourage BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists who have historically been marginalized in our industry and society.
Any gender or body type may audition for any role. An actor’s gender will not impact dialogue, pronouns, or the gender representation of the character on stage.

1 song, 32 bars maximum, In the style of the show.
Accompaniment will be provided for in person auditions.For virtual auditions, please submit a video of your audition material. Additional submission instructions will be provided through the audition form.

Important Dates
As a general rule, rehearsals will take place Sunday through Thursday evenings, with some Saturdays as needed. Performers will not be called to every rehearsal, and we will not rehearse all seven days in a week.
Rehearsals:November 2026–January 2027
Sundays: 6:00PM–10:00PM|Monday–Thursday: 7:00 PM–10:00 PM | Saturdays (Typically 3-4 Saturday Rehearsals per production):12:00 PM–4:00 PM |Tech Week:6:00PM–11:00 PM
The rehearsal schedule will be developed around the cast once casting is complete. Not every performer will be called to every rehearsal.We will not hold rehearsals during the following breaks: November 22–28, 2026 | December 18–January 2, 2027

About RENT
RENT is Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking musical about a group of artists and friends navigating love, friendship, creativity, identity, and community while building their lives in New York City.
This production will be presented as part of SCP’s Bare Stage series, which allows us to create intimate productions centered on the artists and the material while embracing a more streamlined theatrical approach.
Casting Information
RENT calls for a diverse ensemble of performers with strong singing, acting, and storytelling abilities. We are looking for artists who can bring individuality, honesty, and depth to these characters and their relationships.
All races, identities, genders, and body types are encouraged to audition.
SCP remains dedicated to creating theatre that reflects the diversity of the community we serve. We actively seek to create equitable and inclusive artistic environments and encourage performers from historically underrepresented communities, including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists, to audition.
We believe RENT is best served by a cast that brings a wide range of lived experiences, perspectives, and artistic voices to the story. Please Note: Though many of the roles in this show do not have certain requirements in terms of race and ethnicity, a few do. And we will be looking for actors that match those identities to portray those roles.
ROGER DAVIS
He/Him | 20 to 25 | F2 to A4 | Any Race
Struggling musician and former drug addict living with HIV. Guarded and emotionally wounded after the death of his girlfriend, Roger struggles to reconnect with life and find his voice as an artist.
MARK COHEN
He/Him | 20 to 30 | A2 to G4 | Any Race, Jewish
Filmmaker and video artist. Mark documents the lives of those around him but struggles to participate in his own. Intelligent, observant, quirky, and somewhat nerdy.
TOM COLLINS
He/Him | 25 to 35 | F#2 to A4 | Black
Computer genius and professor. Warm, nurturing, intelligent, and compassionate. Collins finds love with Angel and becomes one of the group’s emotional anchors.
BENJAMIN “BENNY” COFFIN III
He/Him | 25 to 35 | Bb2 to F#4 | Any Race
The landlord and former roommate of Mark and Roger. Benny has abandoned his former Bohemian ideals in pursuit of wealth and status, putting him at odds with his old friends.
JOANNE JEFFERSON
She/Her | 25 to 40 | G3 to E5 | Black
A smart, driven public interest lawyer. Controlled and purposeful, Joanne struggles to balance her demanding career with her turbulent relationship with Maureen.
ANGEL DUMOTT SCHUNARD
He/Him | 20 to 30 | C3 to A4 | Any Race
An eccentric street drummer, drag performer, and HIV positive member of the community. Magnetic, generous, joyful, and a gifted dancer. Angel falls deeply in love with Collins. ***Gender-Nonconforming/Non-Binary Actors are strongly encouraged to submit for this role with the understanding that the character identifies/moves within multiple gender representations.
MIMI MARQUEZ
She/Her | 18 to 21 | Eb3 to E5| Black and/or LatinX
A young dancer and stripper battling drug addiction and HIV. Seductive and independent on the surface, Mimi is also vulnerable and searching for connection. She develops a powerful relationship with Roger.
MAUREEN JOHNSON
She/Her | 20 to 25 | C4 to F5 | Any Race
A wildly unpredictable performance artist. Sexual, rebellious, theatrical, and fiercely independent. Maureen’s relationship with Joanne is passionate but complicated by her infidelity and restless nature.
ENSEMBLE
All genders | Various ages | Strong singers encouraged | Any Race
HOMELESS MEN & WOMEN
Members of the Lower East Side community who are facing poverty and housing insecurity. These performers help establish the social and political environment surrounding the main characters.
JUNKIES
People struggling with drug addiction who inhabit the same community as Mimi and Roger. These roles contribute to the gritty, street level reality of the world of RENT.
SUPPORT GROUP
Members of the Life Support group, including Steve and Gordon in the standard version. They are people living with HIV/AIDS who gather together for mutual support. The group provides some of the show’s most communal and emotionally intimate moments.
PARENTS
Several performers portray parents who appear primarily through the show’s telephone/voice mail sequences, including Mrs. Cohen and Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson. These characters provide a contrast between the young artists’ Bohemian lifestyle and the families they have left behind.
